What to Know Before Your First Mongolia Tour

Mongolia rewards travellers who arrive with the right expectations. It is vast, mostly roadless and gloriously empty — which is exactly the point. Here is what first-timers most often wish they had known.

The weather changes fast

A summer day can swing from +30°C at noon to +8°C after sunset, and wind arrives without warning. Think in layers, not in single warm items: t-shirt, fleece, windproof shell. You will use all three in one day.

Distances are real

Outside the capital most "roads" are earth tracks. A 250 km leg can take five hours — that's normal, and the drive itself is the scenery: herds, dunes, sudden canyons. We break long days with stops, and our itineraries never chain two brutal drives back to back.

Ger camps are comfortable — differently

Tourist ger camps have proper beds, a stove, hot showers and a restaurant ger. Family stays are simpler: a wash basin, an outdoor toilet, and hospitality you will remember for years. Both are part of the experience.

Cash, cards and connectivity

Cards work fine in Ulaanbaatar; the countryside runs on cash. Since your tour is prepaid, you'll only need small money for souvenirs and drinks. Mobile coverage is good near towns and gone in the best places — enjoy it.

Travel style: slow is the luxury

The best moments are unscheduled: a herder inviting you in for airag, a foal being named, a silent hour on a dune. Build slack into your plan — Mongolia does not reward tight schedules.
