Staying in a Ger: Etiquette & What to Expect

A ger is a home, not a hotel — and Mongolian hospitality has its own quiet choreography. Nobody expects you to be perfect; knowing a few customs shows respect and starts friendships.

Entering

Step over the threshold, never on it, and move clockwise (to the left) once inside. The north side, opposite the door, is the place of honour — wait to be shown where to sit.

Giving and receiving

Accept tea, food and gifts with your right hand or both hands, sleeves rolled down. Taste what you are offered, even just a sip — refusing outright is awkward; trying and smiling is perfect.

Around the ger

Don't lean on the support poles or walk between them, keep your feet pointed away from the altar or elders, and ask before photographing people — almost everyone says yes warmly.

The night itself

Expect a felt-warm silence, a stove that someone quietly feeds at dawn, and the brightest stars of your life when you step outside. Keep your headlamp by your pillow.

Small gifts

If you want to bring something: fruit, sweets for children, or a postcard from your home town. Hand it to the hosts when you arrive, with both hands.
