When to Visit Mongolia: Month by Month

The main travel season runs May to October, but each slice of it is a different country. Here is an honest month-by-month view.

May – early June

Spring green on the steppe, baby animals everywhere, few visitors. Nights are still cold and the odd dust storm blows through — but photographers love this window.

July

Peak season and peak energy: the Naadam festival (11–13 July) fills the country with wrestling, racing and archery. Book early — camps and flights sell out months ahead.

August

Warmest, greenest, busiest. Ideal for horse treks and family trips; afternoon thunderstorms keep the steppe green.

September

Our favourite. Golden light, empty camps, comfortable Gobi temperatures. The larch forests turn yellow in the north. Pack a down layer for nights.

October & winter

Early October brings the Golden Eagle Festival in the far west. After that, Mongolia turns seriously cold — winter trips (ice festivals, Tsagaan Sar) are unforgettable but need real gear and short daylight planning.
